Ways You Can Make Your Child Want to Exercise!

Childhood obesity is on the rise in this country, and it is likely to continue to increase due to the sedentary lifestyle of today's youth. With the introduction of video games came a different form of entertainment for kids—one that is impacting their health. Even though it may seem like an impossible chore to get your kids off the sofa and moving, there are ways that you can make exercise fun and rewarding for the entire family.
Even toddlers are staying inside close to the television these days. What is the best way to get them moving? By moving with them! This is the easiest age group to get fit since they always love having a grownup play with them and something as simple as chasing them around the house will usually thrill them. Even if your toddler is normally active, it's a good idea to spend time playing active games with them to help them develop the habit and to get some exercise for yourself.
For older children, structure is more important. Bring out their competitive side by encouraging them to play their favorite sport. Even if it isn't your first choice, letting them pursue activities that they prefer will make them more likely to keep to a regular schedule of practice. If you don't think they have any interests that will keep them active, consider some activities that might strike an interest:

• Give them swimming lessons. Swimming is one of the best exercises, because it can be enjoyed without the likelihood of injury that can be associated with other sports. Swimming is also an activity where kids can see themselves advancing and improving and that will encourage them more than anything else

• Go biking with them. Riding a bike around the block can get boring in a hurry. However, if you get your bike and safety equipment and head to a bike trail where you can enjoy a scenic ride together, you both get the benefits.

• Put up a basketball goal. You may not realize the appeal of a goal until you have one in your backyard. They draw kids of all ages to them like a magnet!

• Put a zip line in your backyard. If you aren't familiar with this product, it is a wheeled device that runs along a line while kids or adults hang below. You can't get seats for the little ones and put up as much or as little line as you want. Kids love zipping back and forth and there are even lots of zip line parks where you can go and enjoy the scenery while having a great time working out.

Teenagers are another issue altogether. One of the best ways to get them to do something can be by letting them think they shouldn't be doing it at all! That's where paintballing comes in. This "sport" became popular several years back and it still is. Kids go to a paintball park where they hunt their enemies and try to tag them with paint before they get splattered themselves! Don't like paint? Head to a lazer tag park instead.
No matter what age your children are, getting them outside as much as possible is the key to getting them to exercise more. Even though you may have to "lay down the law" and make them spend thirty minutes a day outside before they can come inside, it usually won't take long before they are finding ways to pass the time that are fun and active.
