4. Restaurant Permits: Operating a restaurant requires obtaining a number of permits. Check with your local government agencies to find out what permits are needed, however, generally one will require a zoning permit, building permit, permit to operate a food establishment, permit to sell alcohol, and more. You can be fined or shut down if you don't have all of the permits. 
 
5. Restaurant Menu: The restaurant menu is a key component of attracting and creating loyal customers. The dishes should reflect the theme of the restaurant. The prices should reflect the type of customers you want to attract. For example, will your restaurant be an expensive fine dining restaurant or an affordable family style restaurant? Your food should be fresh and it should stand out from your competitors' food. 
 
6. Restaurant Employees: Your waiters and waitresses are on the front lines of the business. Your staff should be experienced, professional, respectful, attentive to the diners, and friendly. Make sure staff uniforms are professional and always neat and clean. As well, your chef should be experienced with cooking the dishes you will be serving.

Niche Markets, Niche Market Products and Services Are Like Sleeping Elephants

You've probably heard the old African phrase "You can do anything you want to do to a sleeping elephant. But... when the sleeping Elephant awakens, it will become very aggressive towards you!"
 
 That's my "little" analogy to describe the power of Niche Markets and Niche Market products and services. If you've done any research on finding the "perfect" online business for you and your investors, it probably seems as though every possible thing or service that can be sold is already on the Internet to the point of saturation. That can be intimidating to a new online business person.
 
 But here's the good news! No one website can be "everything" to "everybody." And if one website could be "everything" to "everybody" it could no longer be considered a Niche market website. Make sense?
 
 One of the reasons I picked my first online business from a business model (Satellite TV) that was already very congested on the web, was that I thought in order to have a successful e commerce website the business would need to be modeled after something that was obviously already very successful.
 
 Which is not a bad concept. Find something "everyone wants to buy, and then sell it! Brilliant! Ameliorated. But brilliant! The biggest "hole" in this "swiss cheese" concept is that it is extremely expensive to advertise your business next to the companies that usually dominate these popular categories.
 
 It would be like a 10 year old child trying to advertise a front yard lemonade stand on your local TV station. The advertising cost for that lemonade stand on a television station will be cost prohibitive making it next to impossible for that 10 year old business person to charge a competitive price for the lemonade.
 
 The fact is, if you have opened a new small online business selling popular products or services it's going to be impossible to compete on an advertising level to the extent of being noticed alongside the fortune 500 or NASDAQ rated companies, or even the big websites that have been online for a long time. And you MUST advertise your new online business to have ANY opportunity to achieve any type of success on the Internet.
 
 As a new online business person, you probably don't really want to "hear" that. But if I were here to tell you exactly what you wanted to "hear" I would have to ask you for a fairly large suitcase full of money! (In euros!) Seriously though as a matter of truth... if you do find anything in this article that's agreeable to you, you can still send me a fairly large suitcase full of money. (smiles!)
 
 The perceived difficulty in finding a unique niche market product or service can also be intimidating. I think that the major problem with this type of thinking is rooted in semantics. (The meaning or the interpretation of a word, sentence, or other language form) Since the word "niche" means " A special area of demand for a product or service," it sort of indicates that a niche market, or niche products and services are by nature unique and difficult to think of or find.
 
 Not true! Finding the perfect Niche Market products and services is not as difficult as it may seem! The fact is a "niche market" opportunity is whatever you want it to be! If you can imagine an online business model, then you have already located your very own niche market. Here's the working concept, to find a niche market just think of any product or service and then start a list. Use your list to narrow down any product or service to it's lowest common denominator. Start with the most obvious uses for a product or service and then narrow your list down to the least likely uses for the product or service.
 
 Somewhere on your new list you'll find your perfect Niche Market product and or service. It's that simple! I'll give you the perfect example... several years ago when web marketing was still fairly new there was a online business that was actually selling "doo-doo." Yeah, that's right they were selling and shipping worldwide, gift wrapped boxes of feces, crap, animal butt subs! (Ha,ha!) That "crap" is still funny to me!! (smiles) Pardon the pun.
 
 (smiles) Butt...how did I hear about this very small online business? I heard about them on the evening national network news! Hows that for free advertising? That's what I call competing on a advertising level with the "big" well known and trusted companies.
 
 The reason this niche market website received worldwide publicity was that gift wrapped "animal feces" was a new way to sell a very old product. Think about it. People have been selling animal feces for probably thousands of years.
 
 But it has mostly been marketed as manure. (fertilizer) And if you do a Internet search for manure you would probably find thousands of websites that specialize in animal butt subs, crap, "doo-doo, turds, feces... uhh, manure.
 
 But when you do another search for "gift wrapped crap" (feces) you will find a lot fewer accurate search results. Which of course means a lot less competition for the "gift wrapped crap" connoisseur's and entrepreneurs! Less competition will eventually translate into lower overhead cost for your online business venture.
 
 That is exactly what you want! Let's say for an example you adore and want to sell toothpicks from your website. I just did a Google search using "toothpicks" and this is what I find: "Results 1 - 10 of about 6,510,000 for toothpicks." Only two of the results were accurate for what we are looking for. (wagons made from toothpicks)
 
 Now I just performed a Google search for the term "toothpick wagons" and this is what I find: Results 1 - 10 of about 794,000 for toothpick wagon. Again only two of the results were accurate for what we are looking for. That's a huge competitive difference. Do you agree?
 
 What did you do to efficiently eliminate about five million, seven hundred sixteen thousand of your toughest (5,716,000) competitors? You simply took a fairly popular product and narrowed down or expanded the possible uses for this product.
 
 I thought of the search phrase "toothpicks" spontaneously. No intelligence was required at all other than elementary language and spelling, and "BANGZOOM!" You have just found a new niche market and niche market product to sell plus as an added bonus you'll have minimal competition from other websites selling toothpick products.
 
 You have just created a new "billion dollar industry" and we're still dressed in your underwear! Now take a second to picture that image!(smiles) But seriously my friend, it is pretty much that easy for you to think of a new Internet business model.
 
 Pick a product or service, and then either narrow down or expand your list of uses for the product or service. When you begin brainstorming record every idea, no matter how abstract the ideas may be. Remember if there is a worldwide customer base for gift wrapped boxes of feces, crap, animal butt subs, domestic "doo-doo" (Ha,ha!) then it's pretty much "ALL GOOD!"
 
 There is a market out there for everything that exist. Believe it or not they are even selling bottles of what has been proven to be simple faucet water. Usually for one dollar per bottle.
 
 Water in a bottle. What a niche! The classified section of just about any local newspaper, will list hundreds if not thousands of items that folks are either looking for or selling.
 
 And the great thing about the classifieds... Everything is already digested for you into nice little specialized categories. (Niche's) The next place that's convenient and inexpensive to find great ideas for a niche or specialized online business is your closest bookstore or library.
 
 Try looking in the Hobbies and Self Help sections for starters. You'll find tons of great niche market ideas! Outside markets or "Flea Markets" are another great place you are likely see a lot of unusual items for sale. Just follow the crowd.
 
 You'll begin to see what others are paying for and their level of interest. If you are an outgoing person, you may even be able to do some impromptu research! Ask a few people what they like about a product. Do they think their friends and family members would purchase the product?
 
 You could also do a quick "interview" (interrogation) of the vendors. Find out how their sales and demand for the products are going. You may also consider Garage sales for good Niche Market ideas and products. And here's a new way to show a "newly found" interest and enthusiasm for the conversation of your friends and co-workers...
 
 Most people enjoy talking about themselves. Listen, and you'll hear them talking about the things that they have purchased, want to purchase, wish they could find, and on, and on, and on. And on... Keep listening! I'm sure you will come up with all sorts of ideas, before your co-worker takes a breath! (big smile!)
 
 In closing let me reiterate my original point "Niche Markets and Niche Market products and services are like sleeping Elephants." Meaning that powerful niche market products, services, and ideas are sleeping all around you. If you awaken just one of these "sleeping elephants" (like the "toothpick wagon") it can become very aggressive on your behalf.
 Always remember... "Any pursuit is GREAT... when GREATLY pursued!

Whey Protein Fights Cancer, Improves Immunity, And Other Health Benefits

Studies on whey demonstrate it's an even better protein supplement than previously thought. Although whey protein's health benefits have only recently been elucidated, the use of whey protein for medicinal purposes has been prescribed since the time of Hippocrates. In fact, there are two ancient proverbs from the Italian city of Florence that say, "If you want to live a healthy and active life, drink whey," and, "If everyone were raised on whey, doctors would be bankrupt."
 
 In previous issues, we've chronicled the extensive research showing the many potential health benefits of whey protein concentrate. The majority of that research was done in the 1980s and early 1990s, and was extremely persuasive. Scientists have continued their research on whey proteins with even more impressive results. What follows is some of the more current, interesting and useful research on whey proteins.
 
 Whey and Cancer
 
 Additional studies have been done on animals regarding cancer-causing chemicals to see what effects whey protein concentrate would have on cancer prevention or treatment. Scientists fed rats various proteins and then subjected them to the powerful carcinogen dimethylhydrazine.
 
 As with the previous research, the rats fed whey protein concentrate showed fewer tumors and a reduced pooled area of tumors (tumor mass index). The researchers found whey protein offered "considerable protection to the host" over that of other proteins, including soy. 1
 
 Even more exciting, in vivo research on cancer and whey showed whey protein concentrate inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells at low concentrations (Baruchel S. and Vaiu G., Anti Cancer Research, 1996). Finally, and most importantly, a fairly recent clinical study with cancer patients showed a regression in some patient's tumors when fed whey protein concentrate at 30 grams per day. 2
 
 Whey and Glutathione
 
 This new research using whey protein concentrate led researchers to an amazing discovery regarding the relationship between cancerous cells, glutathione (GSH) and whey protein concentrate. It was found that whey protein concentrate selectively depletes cancer cells of their glutathione, thus making them more susceptible to cancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.
 
 It has been found that cancer cells and normal cells will respond differently to nutrients and drugs that affect glutathione status. What is most interesting to note is the fact that the concentration of glutathione in tumor cells is higher than that of the normal cells that surround it. This difference in glutathione status between normal cells and cancer cells is believed to be an important factor in cancer cells' resistance to chemotherapy.
 
 As the researchers put it, "Tumor cell GSH concentration may be among the determinants of the cytotoxicity [poisonous to cells] of many chemotherapeutic agents and of radiation, and an increase in GSH concentration appears to be at least one of the mechanisms of acquired drug resistance to chemotherapy."
 
 They further state, "It is well-known that rapid GSH synthesis in tumor cells is associated with high rates of cellular proliferation. Depletion of tumor GSH in vivo decreases the rate of cellular proliferation and inhibits cancer growth."
 
 The problem is, it's difficult to reduce glutathione sufficiently in tumor cells without placing healthy tissue at risk and putting the cancer patient in a worse condition. What is needed is a compound that can selectively deplete the cancer cells of their glutathione, while increasing, or at least maintaining, the levels of glutathione in healthy cells.
 
 This is exactly what whey protein appears to do. In this new research it was found that cancer cells subjected to whey proteins were depleted of their glutathione, and their growth was inhibited, while normal cells had an increase in GSH and increased cellular growth.
 
 These effects were not seen with other proteins. Not surprisingly, the researchers concluded, "Selective depletion of tumor GSH may in fact render cancer cells more vulnerable to the action of chemotherapy and eventually protect normal tissue against the deleterious effects of chemotherapy." The exact mechanism by which whey protein achieves this is not fully understood, but it appears that it interferes with the normal feedback mechanism and regulation of glutathione in cancer cells.
 
 It is known that glutathione production is negatively inhibited by its own synthesis. Being that baseline glutathione levels in cancer cells are higher than that of normal cells, it is probably easier to reach the level of negative-feedback inhibition in the cancer cells' glutathione levels than in the normal cells' glutathione levels.
 
 Whey and LDL Cholesterol
 
 The positive health benefits of whey protein concentrate does not end with its effects on immunity and cancer prevention and treatment. Whey protein concentrate also was found to be a potent inhibitor of oxidized low density lipoprotein cholesterol. Current research suggests that the conversion of LDL to oxidized LDL is the trigger that leads to atherogenesis... the formation of the plaque and lesions associated with atherosclerosis.
 
 Therefore, any substance that prevents the oxidation of LDL is thought to be anti-atherogenic. Though animal-based proteins have traditionally been implicated as being pro-atherogenic, whey proteins appear to be an exception to the rule. whey protein is made up of several minor and major fractions, such as beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, albumin, lactoferrin and immunoglobulin. It was discovered that the minor constituent responsible for the ability of whey protein concentrate to prevent the oxidation of LDL appears to be the lactoferrin fraction of the protein. 3
 
 Lactoferrin In Whey
 
 When the lactoferrin was removed from the protein, the ability of the whey-protein concentrate to prevent LDL oxidation was greatly reduced, leading the researchers to speculate, "Our results suggest that LF (lactoferrin) is the main factor responsible for the inhibitory effect of whey protein (on LDL) and it may function synergistically together with other factors in the whey protein, for example, alpha-lactalbumin."
 
 Another study using rats examined the effects of whey protein concentrate and casein on cholesterol and the risk factors of heart disease. Though casein (another milk-based protein commonly used in research) is known to raise cholesterol in humans and animals, whey protein has the opposite effect, leading the researchers to note, "At the high dietary protein level [300 gram per kilogram of feed] , whey protein significantly lowered plasma and liver cholesterol and also plasma triacylglycerols." 4
 
 The cholesterol-lowering effects of whey protein concentrate in this study also was associated with a reduction in LDL cholesterol. It is also customary for the parents of the city to give St. Nicholas a little gift of their own, which may be hidden so the children must hunt to find it. After the procession ends, Santa joins the parents in a toast, which for many marks the start of the Christmas season.
 
 Poetry and Passion on Petrin Hill
 Here in the UK, we know the May the 1st as a day of anarchy and rioting. However, in Prague the sentiment couldn't be more different. May Day is unofficial lover's day with poetry and passion making an appearance on the famous Petrin Hill.
 
 "Late evening, on the first of May, the twilit May—the time of love" begins the famous poem, May, by Karel Hynek Macha, a 19th century Czech poet. After delivering the flowers tradition dictates that couples make their way up to Petrin Hill in the centre of Prague and spend the afternoon making out.
 Ancient tradition in Prague says that on May 1st a girl should be kissed under a cherry tree to keep her beautiful for the rest of the year. However, with cherry trees rare in the city and the publication of 'May' the unofficial lover's day was born.

Attract Prospects Instead of Chasing Them

Before I reveal the secret of effective marketing, I want to explain a fascinating exercise I often utilize. You have probably seen it performed before. I pick a volunteer out of the audience and stand face-to-face with one hand up as if we are about to take an oath. I then move my hand forward until our palms make contact. Then I gently start pushing. Without saying a word, the same thing ALWAYS happens. The other person pushes back.
 
 Although this is an amusing activity, it is very significant. When humans feel someone pushing us, we naturally push back. It is one of several ingrained instincts that many marketers fail to address.
 
 You probably feel this resistance in every sales presentation and sometimes when you are just trying to get an appointment. Why is that? Remember that most people hate "being sold" and find it about as enjoyable as being the antelope trying to escape from a lion. The sale is a fight they do not want to be part of, so they flee. The Fight or Flight mentality has been a part of our instincts for tens of thousands of years. If there is something we do not want to face, we flee.
 
 This leads me to one of my favorite sayings. Several, years ago, I was coaching an advisor who was telling me about a great prospect he had met a month earlier at a party. He said "I know I can close the sale if I can just get the appointment. But, I have left 8 messages in the past two weeks and he has not returned any of them." Without thinking too much about it, I responded with "If you chase them, they will run." The more this advisor pushed for the appointment, the more the prospect resisted.
 
 At this point, you are probably thinking "Steve, what a worthless article. We know prospecting and sales are difficult. All you have done is remind me." Bear with me. We have determined that prospects would rather flee than fight a salesperson and that the harder we push, the more the client resists.
 
 How do you market in a way that does not launch these natural instincts? Many businesses use mass advertising (TV, radio, magazine, newspaper, mailings, etc.) to get your word to thousands of people.
 
 Many years ago, I thought the same thing. We were a medium size operation and I wanted us to become one of the "big boys" in our market. So, I looked to see what those big competitors were doing. Every one of them had full-color, full-page ads in industry trade magazines. Obviously, that must be the solution. So, we opened our pocketbook and shelled out $4800 per month for one ad that would be read by nearly 100,000 prospects. Then we sat in the office with a hand hovering over the phone waiting for the calls to come pouring in. Not one call. At the time, we did not understand marketing.
 
 Do you think Coca-Cola advertises to attract people who have never heard of Coke? No. They just want to stay in front of you. How often have you seen a commercial from a company you have never heard of, and then you went out and bought their product right away? Almost never. Mass marketing is a great way for large companies to stay in front of existing customers, but it is a horrible way to attract prospects who currently do not know you. This is the single biggest misconception small businesses have.
 
 The best way to introduce yourself to new prospects is by using Attraction Marketing. If a prospect is referred to you, recommended to you, or finds you before you find them, you have a better chance of converting this prospect to a client. Don't Take it Sitting Down - Standing and Health

Maybe you're a fire jumper, riding helicopters into the heart of blazing infernos, where you run around putting your life on the line to put the blaze out. Or a professional marathon runner, exercising day in and day out, racking up the miles and the awards. Or a cop, working your beat, or a nurse, on your feet through the graveyard shift. But, most likely, you're not. You're an office worker, reading this on your office computer, in your chair where you spend eight hours a day. No judgment! I too work in an office all day long. However, you and I should look out—recent studies show that spending your day seated has a high correlation with a radically increased chance of heart disease. So, unless you actually are a fire jumper, read on and learn what you can do about it!
 
 Let's get down to the facts. A study published by Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise revealed a striking, almost terrifying correlation between sitting on your rear end all day and heart disease. The researchers studied the amount of time spent sitting and mortality in about 17,000 Canadians (aged 18-20) for 12 years and found that sitting almost all the time (excluding sleep, unless you're really crazy) increases your risk of dying from heart related diseases by 54% compared to sitting almost none or a quarter of the time. If you sit for three quarters of your day it increases by 47%, and half increases it by 22%.
 
 Think about it. Let those numbers sink in. If you spend your whole day behind a desk, the chances of your dying of a heart related disease go up by more than fifty percent. But what is that I hear you cry? You exercise after work? No matter! The risk is still 40% higher compared to those who don't sit at all. "High amounts of sitting cannot be compensated with occasional leisure time physical activity recommendations," says research author Peter Katzmarzyk, PhD, professor of epidemiology at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA.
 
 What does sitting do to your system? Being sedentary (absence of whole-body movement) is associated with obesity, abnormal glucose metabolism and the metabolic syndrome. Basically, sitting down shuts off your body's fat burning mechanisms. When you are seated for a long time, your legs are inactive (unless you are one of those annoying types who drum their heels incessantly) and consequently you lose flexibility, and oxygen and nutrients can't flow properly through your body.
 
 So what can you do to ameliorate this potential for death? Going to the gym after work doesn't make any substantive difference in this particular case, so is there anything you can do? Yes. Of course there is! Just get up every twenty minutes or so and dance around, shake out your legs and touch your toes. Drink tons of water so that you have to go to the bathroom often. Also, even just 11 minutes of resistance (weight) training can rev up your metabolism. Having a set of weights under your desk can be an easy and fun way to exercise whenever you stand up—just grab them and do some shoulder presses, and some bicep curls, and you'll almost immediately be miles ahead of the others who just languish at their desks without ever twitching a muscle.

Are You a Discipline Wimp?

Your child wants ice cream at bedtime. You say "No" but your child persists, whining and bugging you until you finally give in to stop the incessant whining.
 
 Your child wants to play with a friend, but you've said "No friends until your book report is done." A friend calls to ask your child to a new movie that's opened. You let him go to the movie, saying he can do the report that night.
 
 Your child doesn't pick up his/her toys when asked. You end up picking the toys up for your child.
 
 You tell your child that s/he is grounded for a week. Do you stick to your guns or cave under the pressure?
 
 Why is it so hard to be consistent in discipline?
 
 There are obvious answers. You're tired. You take the path of least resistance. The kids wear you down. But to really get to the bottom of this, you have to dig deeper. In order to make real, significant changes, you have to examine what holds you back in following through with reasonable discipline options.
 
 Let's start with the words "reasonable discipline." Did you really want to ground your child for a whole week or did you just say that out of anger? If your child did something really awful you may want to ground them for a week, but if you said it out of anger, you need to give yourself a break before you discipline your child so you don't deal out a punishment that you won't follow through on because it's too harsh. Choose your words (and punishments) carefully.
 
 Guilt. This is a big one. The majority of parents work outside the home now. Do you feel guilty when your child is in the care of others for 6 or 8 or 10 hours a day? Most parents do. Guilt can drive you to try and make up the time lost with your kids by turning the time you do have together into "fun" time. You don't want to play the "heavy" if you only have 3 or 4 hours a day together.
 
 My child won't like me. Your child won't like the action that you took. That part is true. Who likes to be punished? But you have a long, deep and endearing relationship with your child with thousands of investments you've made in caring for them. Stephen Covey calls this "an emotional bank account." If you have enough goodwill stored up in the back account, occasional punishments will not empty the bank account permanently. Your child will still love you, but they will pout and stomp and be unhappy about the punishment. Try to separate the action that you're taking from the personal attribution.
 
 My child needs me. This one is tough. If your child is begging for one more bedtime story you believe your child NEEDS you and you want to fulfill that need. Isn't that your job as a parent? Try to examine where your child's need is coming from and your own need to be needed. Are there other times of day when you can connect in meaningful ways with your child? Is it your job to ensure that your child gets adequate sleep? Try to look at various needs your child has and weigh what's most important to fill at the time.
 
 It will hurt my child's feelings. The truth is that sometimes your child's feelings will be hurt. If you don't let your child go to the movie with a friend because his book report isn't done, whose fault was it? Your child procrastinated for two days. He had ample time to complete it earlier but chose to play video games instead. You outlined the consequences, but your child chose to ignore them. Should your child learn from his mistakes or should you prevent him from feeling the "pain" of actions he took?
 
 The consequences of being inconsistent in your discipline are actually quite grave. Your child will learn that s/he cannot trust you. Your child will lose respect for you. Your child will not develop a set of boundaries that delineate between parent and child, authority figure/child. Your child will not have a firm, reliable structure to count on. Your child will feel insecure.
 
 Your child will have a false set of empowerment. S/he will feel in charge, when s/he really needs you to be the one in charge. The child will learn that you hold them to a lower standard and in fact, that you believe they are incapable of meeting the standard that you set. They will learn that they don't have to meet standards because standards are negotiable. They will ultimately lose respect for themselves because they are learning that they are not responsible for their own behavior.
 
 So the next time you feel like letting the consequence go, think of all the good that can come from positive discipline methods, consistently applied. Your child will feel more secure. Life will be more predictable for your child. Some crises will be avoided. Your child will learn to do things for him/herself. Your child will learn appropriate boundaries. Your child will learn self-care. Your child will learn that you are trustworthy, reliable and responsible. The firm structure that you build will enhance your child's self-esteem. Some nasty behaviors will subside because there are consequences.
 
 When you've been a "discipline wimp" try to figure out what held you back from being firm. Then pick one of the consequences of parental inconsistency that hit you in the gut. i.e. My child cannot believe what I say. Repeat it to yourself the next time you discipline your child. Make it your mantra for future use. By keeping your eye on the prize: responsible, confident and capable young adults, you'll be more likely to set, and keep (!) firm limits.

Race Drivers Turned Espionage Agents

When World War II came to France, three of her race drivers were excelling on the tracks. Robert Benoist had won the French, Spanish, Italian and British Grand Prix and as the only driver to do this in one year, he received the Legion of Honor from the French Government.
 
 Then in 1937 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. Benoist's friend Jean-Pierre Wimille had won the 24 Hours of LeMans partnered with Robert had placed second in the Vanderbilt Cup and had won both the Algerian Grand Prix and the French Grand Prix. Fellow racing driver Grover-Williams, using the alias W. Williams had placed first in the inaugural Monaco Grand Prix, and was a two-time winner of the French Grand Prix.
 
 However, when the Nazis invaded and occupied France, auto racing was over for the duration. France, liked many other Nazi occupied European countries developed an underground resistance army to fight the Nazis in any way they could. The three racing drivers escaped to England. Grover-William joined the Royal Army Service Corps. But due to his fluency in both French and English, the British recruited Grover-William into the SOE. Benoist and Jean-Pierre Wimille also joined the SOE.
 
 SOE was an acronym for the Special Operations Executive, an intelligence group that had been formed to aid Nazi resistance groups operating in the occupied countries of Europe. It was headquartered at 64 Baker Street in London. In the words of Sir Winston Churchill who was Prime Minister at that time, the SOE's mission was to "set Europe ablaze." It had a twofold task to train underground armies that would be ready to assist in the coming invasion and to hamper the Nazi war effort through effective sabotage operations.
 
 All three men received extensive training in espionage operations and Grover-Williams was also trained as a demolition specialist. Upon completion of training, Grover-Williams, using the code name Vladmir, was assigned to set up a sabotage network that would be known as 'Chestnut' and was parachuted into occupied France on the morning of May 31, 1942. Benoist assisted Grover-Williams in carrying out the work of Chestnut and they were joined by Wimille. However, Chestnut was discovered by the Nazis and all three men were arrested. Benoist made a daring escape by jumping from the patrol car and hiding out until he could return to England. After an unsuccessful trip back to France, Benoist again returned to England but came back to France in March of 1944 and started to work on reviving Chestnut.
 
 In June of 1944, the Nazi's struck again. This time it was Wimille who made the daring escape. He first dodged the rifles by sprinting between parked cars and then dived into a stream where he floated with only his nose above water until the Nazis departed. Robert Benoist was imprisoned in Buchenwald where he was executed in September of 1944. Grover-Williams was placed in solitary confinement at Sachsenhausen and supposedly faced a firing squad in March 1945. Wimille survived to continue racing. Their experiences
 formed the basis for Robert Ryan's novel, 'Early One Morning.'

Motor Racing Driver and Spy

William Charles Frederick Grover was born on January 16, 1903 in Montrouge, Paris, France. His father, Frederick Grover, was English and a horse breeder. William's mother, Hermance Dagan Grover, was French. When William was eleven, his parents sent him to England to stay with relatives. After World War I, the family moved to Monte Carlo where William developed an interest in automobiles. He learned to drive a Rolls Royce and obtained a driver's license in Monaco. When he was 15, he acquired a motorcycle that he adored. In 1919 William Orpen, the official artist of the Paris Peace Conference hired Grover to be his chauffeur. During this employment, he drove both Orpen and his mistress Yvonne Aubicq with whom he became friendly.
 
 In the early 1920's Grover started in motorcycle racing but he raced under the name of W. Williams to keep his family from finding out. Again, using the pseudonym W. Williams Grover started entering car races driving a Bugatti He started in the Grand Prix de Provence and the Monte Carlo Rally. Then he won the French Grand Prix in 1928 and 1929. Again in 1929, he entered the inaugural Monaco Grand Prix. William came in first ahead of the famous German driver Rudolf Caracciola. In the same year he married Yvonne Aubicq who had since dissolved her relationship with Orpen. Grover-Williams continued to race and in 1931 placed first in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. Then he went on to win the Grand Prix de la Baule each year from 1931 to 1933.
 
 When the Nazis invaded and occupied France in World War II, Grover-Williams left for England to join the Royal Army Service Corps. However, his fluency in both English and French attracted the attention of the Special Operations Executive, an English intelligence unit that had been formed to organize and assist underground resistance forces in the Nazi occupied nations of Europe. The SOE recruited Grover-Williams and after extensive training he was parachuted into France with orders to set up an underground network code named 'Chestnut.' Its mission was to organize a resistance army for use in the coming invasion of France and carry out sabotage operations against the Nazis. Grover-Williams' friends from the racing circuit, Robert Benoist and Jean-Pierre Wimille joined him to help with establishing the network.
 
 Unfortunately, the Nazis learned of the operation, possibly through a double agent and raided them in August of 1943. Grover-Williams was imprisoned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and is believed to have been executed there in March 1945. A video game, called The Saboteur has been created with an Irish protagonist whose name is Sean Devlin. Devlin's role is thought to be based upon the wartime experiences of Grover-Williams. The novel by
 Robert Ryan, 'Early One Morning' is also based upon the espionage activities of Grover-Williams and his racing friends, Benoist and Wimille.
 
 The Brookwood Memorial in Surrey, England lists Grover-Williams as one of the SOE agents who gave his life to liberate France. He is also honored in France with his name on the Valencay SOE Memorial Roll of Honour in the town of Valencay.
